Play now

A team game where the same pile of words is guessed three times under increasingly tight rules. First free description, then a single word, finally gestures only.

It works because the group builds its own running jokes. By the third round everyone remembers how each word was described in the first, so even absurd gestures land. Great for dinners and gatherings of six to twelve people who don't know each other well.

How to play

Classic three rounds. Traditional rules, in our own words. Rules version 1.0.

In a nutshell

How to win: Get your team to guess more words than the others across three rounds.

Start right away

  1. Split into two teams of at least two, seated alternately.
  2. Everyone writes three or four well-known words or names and drops them in the bowl.
  3. Taking turns, someone draws slips for one minute and gets their team to guess them.
  4. When the bowl is empty, refill it with the same slips and change the rule.

Setup

  1. Split players into teams of similar size. With many players, use three or four teams.
  2. Everyone secretly writes the same number of words (characters, objects, films, places). Avoid terms only the writer would know.
  3. Fold the slips and mix them in the bowl.

Turn by turn

  1. One team starts. A player from that team takes the bowl and starts a one-minute timer.
  2. They draw a slip and get their team to guess it under the current round's rule. If guessed, they keep the slip and draw another.
  3. Round 1, describe: say anything except the word or parts of it.
  4. Round 2, one word: give a single word as the clue.
  5. Round 3, mime: no talking or sounds, gestures only.
  6. When the minute is up, the slip in play goes back to the bowl and the next team takes a turn with a different player.

A sample round

In round one, for "lighthouse" someone says "tower by the sea that warns ships". In round two "ships" is enough. In round three, a spinning-light gesture brings it back.

How it ends

Each round ends when the bowl is empty. After the third round, the team with the most guessed slips wins.

Scoring

Each guessed slip is worth one point to the team that guessed it. Add up all three rounds.

Tips

  • If someone is stuck, in our variant they may pass and return the slip to the bowl without penalty.
  • A turn interrupted by the end of a round carries over into the next round with its remaining time.
